El laboratorio de Fisiología Genética Marina (FIGEMA) trata de comprender las respuestas de los organismos marinos a los cambios de su entorno desde su fisiología hasta la genética. Se enfoca en investigar problemas aplicados a la acuicultura, pero también de índole ecológica.
Específicamente, estudiamos cómo las capacidades fisiológicas y rasgos asociados al crecimiento están modulados por factores: 1) ambientales de tipo externo (como la disponibilidad y calidad de alimento, cambios térmicos y de oxígeno) e interno (como estado de desarrollo, reproductivo o nutricional, y presencia de enfermedades); 2) genéticos, como efectos de polimorfismos en loci particulares, genotipo individual, expresión de genes y herencia poligénicas sobre la variación de los caracteres.
En nuestros estudios utilizamos herramientas de investigación a diferentes niveles de organización biológica: molecular, individual, conductual y poblacional.
A través de nuestra investigación tenemos como meta apoyar a la acuicultura a través de generar organismos marinos con mejoras en sus capacidades fisiológicas asociadas al crecimiento, reproducción, respuesta al estrés y respuesta inmune.
